Almost all of the pain sufferers who arrive at my door are those who have already traveled a long, long road in search of something or someone who can get rid of their pain. The one thing all of these people have in common is that they haven’t given up hope.
When faced with adversity for long periods of time, it’s natural to want to call it quits. It’s times like this that we all need a few hugs and some words of wisdom. The following sage advice was written by Dr. Mercola, a natural health advocate.
Face Adversity with a Smile
Dr Mercola, January 14, 2010
“Problems are there to be faced and overcome. You cannot achieve anything with an easy life. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person to gain a University degree. She wrote:
“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.”
How can you change your attitude toward the adversity that you face? Try these steps:
1. Confront the problem. Do not avoid it.
2. Deliberately take a positive attitude and write down some benefits or advantages of the situation.
3. Visualize how you will feel when you overcome this obstacle.
4. Develop an action plan for how to tackle it.
5. Smile and get to work.
The biographies of great people are littered with examples of how they took these kinds of steps to overcome the difficulties they faced. They did not become defeatist or depressed. They chose their attitude, and won. It’s not how you start; it’s how you finish.”
In my opinion, ‘develop an action plan for how to tackle it’ can be the most challenging, especially in the area of chronic pain, as there is so much misinformation on how to get rid of it.
The key is to keep reading new material. Look into different, innovative therapies, even if they are unfamiliar to you. But, do not take the written word as gospel truth. Instead, think about what is being said and if it makes sense to you. If it does, then develop an action plan for how to tackle your problem. Which takes us to the last words of advice from Dr Mercola – “Get to work”!
