Profile Of A Typical Candidate For Therapy
If you suffer from the symptoms of sciatica, which include pain in the lower back that extends into severe radiating hip and leg pain, you know what true agony is. For many, the pain in the back of the thigh is so intense, they cannot sit or sleep comfortably. Because sciatica symptoms are so debilitating, sufferers are willing to subject themselves to the most barbaric surgeries and dangerous spinal injections, praying that their pain will be alleviated.
These draconian treatments would never be tolerated if the patient was educated as to what is the true causes of sciatica and informed that there is a simpler, non dangerous and more effective way to get rid of their radiating pain. Without this knowledge, you’re at the mercy of your surgeon’s recommendation; which is usually drugs, then physical therapy and if these fail; surgery.
To help you make an informed choice about your health care, let me explain what causes sciatica. Radiating pain from your lower back down your legs (sciatica) is the result of compression on one of the sacral nerves, where it leaves the spinal cord. Keep reading to learn how this happens.
How Disk Degeneration Leads To Disk Herniation Resulting In Sciatica
It starts with disk degeneration – the result of which is a thinning and bulging (e.g. disc herniation)of the vertebral disc.
When the disc thins, the spinal joint space narrows. When the spinal joint space narrows, the adjacent vertebrae become closer together.
When the adjacent vertebrae become closer together (which can result in the disc herniating) , osteophytes, also called bone spurs, may develop. If these bone spurs develop around the spinal foremen (the opening where the spinal nerve leaves the spinal cord) the spinal foremen narrows.
As the foramen becomes more and more narrow, it can reach a point where the sacral nerve is compressed. This results in sciatica.
(See animation below).
If Disc Degeneration Is A Cause Of Sciatica, What Causes The Disc Degeneration?
The question is: What causes the disc degeneration? Your surgeon will tell you that there are many causes. The two most frequently cited in medical literature are trauma and aging. But in my 40 years of clinical research and experience, this is contrary to what I’ve observed; as there are 20 year olds with advanced disc degeneration and 80 year olds with relatively little.
With my patients, I observed that those with postural distortions (spinal misalignment) tend to have the most severe disc degeneration. Having run several clinical studies, I came to the conclusion that disc degeneration is frequently the result of asymmetrical compression of the discs, resulting from a spinal misalignment.
When my patients come to me with radiating pain from their back down their legs and their doctor has told them that the reason is a degenerated disc resulting in sciatica, the two things I look at are: the severity of the nerve compression and the cause of the degeneration of the disc.
If the compression on the spinal nerve and/or herniated disc is advanced enough, there may be no option other than surgical decompression, to eliminate the symptoms of sciatica. But if the nerve compression and/or disc herniation is not so severe (and hence reversible) then the next question is to find out the cause of the disc degeneration.
A study I completed, suggests that a common cause of spinal misalignment is two inherited, abnormal foot structures – the Rothbarts and PreClinical Clubfoot Deformity.
These foot structures are effectively treated with a non invasive, highly effective treatment called Rothbart Proprioceptive Therapy. Using this therapy, the health of the disc is improved, which in turn expands the joint space and decompresses the sacral nerve. When the compression is eliminated, the sciatica goes away.
