Did the title of this article grab your attention? You aren’t the only one. We all dream of a quick and easy fix to end chronic pain; hence the reason peddlers were successfully selling snake oil since the beginning of time. Even they knew there’s no magic potion, but that didn’t stop them from claiming there was.
Speaking of magic potions, currently, prefabricated proprioceptive insoles are being marketed all over the world to both consumers and healthcare practitioners with the claim that they quickly, easily and inexpensively get rid of chronic pain caused by the Rothbarts Foot. The company that manufactures them provides a guarantee stating that if the insoles don’t work, you may return them for a refund.
As good as this sounds, I’d like to tell you about a disturbing trend I’m seeing in my practice. Some of my patients – before coming to me – had bought these prefabricated insoles on the internet or had been prescribed them by their healthcare practitioner. They found out the hard way that these insoles didn’t work as they had expected, and for many; their pain symptoms worsened.
A seeming contradiction; when I visit the websites of practitioners using these prefabricated insoles, I read rave reviews. But being the discoverer of the Rothbarts Foot and PreClinical Clubfoot Deformity and having treated them for many, many years, I know for a fact that the doctor must follow an exacting and highly technical protocol in order to get real and lasting results. If one diverts from this protocol, the results will not be there.
These sites also state the practitioners are certified to prescribe and dispense these prefabricated insoles. But what they don’t say is that their certification is based on watching a ½ hour video and reading a manual based on research I did 25 years ago. My current research proves that much of that old information is inaccurate and potentially misleading.
These same practitioners cite me as being the researcher and authority behind their product, because these insoles are based on a design I made 20 years ago. Citing my publications of this same time period, they try to validate and add credibility to their use of the prefabricated insoles. *Note that they do not and will not cite my recent publications, in which I talk about the problems of using prefabricated and inappropriate proprioceptive insoles.
Having said this, there are people who have a very mild, uncomplicated Rothbarts Foot and no other body issues. For these lucky souls a generic insole may work to some degree. This is because a simple, uncomplicated Rothbarts Foot is not a severe abnormal foot structure and will respond (to some degree) to any of the 3 sizes of prefabricated, generic insoles that are being sold/dispensed.
Maybe this hit and miss approach is good enough for people who are not greatly suffering to begin with. But most chronic pain sufferers who pay the money and make the time to see a doctor are really hurting, and most of them do not have a simple Rothbarts Foot. It’s a tragedy that these people are being misled by practitioners who have the audacity to say they’re trained and certified to use what they state to be my work.
How Can This Happen?
The insole wearer often does not realize that the new and seemingly unrelated symptoms they’re now developing are the result of wearing the wrong proprioceptive insole. And even though I’ve published extensively on this subject – neither the doctors dispensing these insoles, nor the company selling them understand or seem to care about the far reaching implications of wearing a wrong proprioceptive insole.
Examples to illustrate my point:
- A doctor dispenses you a generic insole. Upon leaving his office, you feel less pain; but three months later you start developing stomach problems and constipation.
Like many people, (including many doctors) you may not be aware that your feet (and what you put under them) affect your entire body. You may not make the connection that this developing gastrointestinal problem is due to the incorrect insole under your feet.
Because you don’t make this connection, instead of going back to the doctor who dispensed your insoles, you more than likely go to see your family practitioner.
If you do return to the doctor who dispensed your insoles, he will assume your insoles are working well because your knee or back pain has subsided. So when you mention your stomach problems, he most likely will have no understanding that these symptoms are the result of using the wrong insole. So he will advise you to see a practitioner who specializes in GI issues.
- Six months after starting to use the insoles, you develop unexplainable anger and short term memory problems. Who would realize that these issues are coming from inappropriate insoles?
- Several years after you start wearing your insoles, you develop dental issues such as problems with your bite, clicking in your jaw, shifting teeth and/or tongue biting. Let’s face it; if you even conceive that your dental issues are coming from the insoles you’ve been using for years, how many doctors would even believe you???
The list of problems that can develop from using the wrong proprioceptive insole is quite long. And because they often don’t develop immediately after you start to use them, you’ll probably never make the connection. And neither will your doctor.
Please understand. I’m not theorizing nor am I trying to scare you. I’ve done the research and demonstrated over and over that these problems can and do occur quite often. And this is the paradox – the patient is seemingly getting better, but in actuality, they’re trading one set of painful symptoms for another.
There’s No Quick And Easy Fix To End Your Chronic Pain
One must realize that using a proprioceptive insole is a whole body approach in which the central nervous system is being reprogrammed. My insoles and the therapy I use to reprogram the brain cannot be learned in a ½ hour video and a manual. And to my knowledge and experience to date, it cannot be taught by anyone but me.
Practitioners who think they can quickly incorporate prefabricated, generic propriocetive insoles into their practice without having far reaching problems with many of their patients, are kidding themselves.
Do I sound frustrated? I am. I left a lucrative surgical practice because I was tired of seeing patients in pain return with more pain. I wanted to make a real difference in the lives of chronic pain sufferers. I devoted my life to finding the common cause of chronic muscle and joint pain and developed an effective therapy that permanently eliminates chronic pain. I did not make these sacrifices in order to watch my 45 years of research and findings being misused, and often for the sole purpose of profit.
