Why A Consultation With Dr. Rothbart Is Different Than With Other Doctors
Profile Of A Typical Candidate For Therapy
Before having back surgery, you need to know the cause of your back problem. This statement seems self-evident, but many a chronic pain sufferer has chosen surgery simply because they did not understand the difference between the cause of their back problem and their doctor’s diagnosis.
In the article, Considering Spine surgery? What You Need To Know, author Stephanie Burke writes that identifying the cause of your pain is different from what is anatomically wrong with your back. For example, you may have a herniated disk that shows up on an MRI scan, but if that is not the cause of your pain, then surgery for the herniated disc will not help you find pain relief.
She continues; saying “You and your doctors should be able to articulate the precise pain generator before surgery is even considered. Many practitioners believe that one of the most common causes of “failed back surgery syndrome” (continued pain after surgery) is an improper diagnosis prior to surgery.”
What seems to be frequently misunderstood by many chronic pain patients (and so ill equips them in choosing the right therapy to get rid of their back pain) is that the precise pain generator (the cause of the pain) may not be the same as the diagnosis. For example, a doctor may tell you that you have a disc herniation or disc protrusion (common diagnoses for back pain). But this disc herniation or protrusion may not be the cause of your chronic back pain. Or a physician may accurately name a radiographic change that he observes in your back (the diagnosis), but this radiographic change may not be not the cause of your chronic back pain.
In other words, often the diagnosis given to you is not the cause of your pain, but simply a name given to the constellation of your symptoms (what you are complaining about) and signs (what your doctor observes).
This can be confusing when you go to a surgeon seeking advice on how to handle your back pain, because it seems logical (in having given a name to your problem – the diagnosis) that the doctor knows the solution – and that this solution is surgery.
Before Making A Decision On Back Surgery, You Need To Know The Cause Of Your Back Pain
As a pain sufferer, seeking the optimal solution on how to get rid of your back pain, there are two things that you need to know before deciding on whether to have back surgery: The cause of your back pain (not the name given to your symptoms) and whether your doctor knows how to effectively treat that cause so as to permanently eliminate your pain.
